Fight Night in St. Cloud featured some of the best talent that Minnesota Mixed Martial Arts has to offer and treated the fans to one exciting finish after another. In preliminary action Brent Puffee used an early slam to inflict some heavy damage and got out of a deep armbar attempt from Chad Vaudrin to secure the submission by rear naked choke midway through the first round. In heavyweight action, Joe Glarum overcame a huge weight disadvantage to outlast Eric Stoven in a back and forth war. Glarum was on the bottom for much of the first round, but managed to sweep the much heavier Stoven early in the second round and landed some heavy strikes from the top forcing the referee to stop the action. Jeremy Hamilton showed notable submission skills as he was able to tap out Brandon Halverson in less than one minute with a triangle choke. Ben Roehl landed a big knee that dropped Kyle Goorhouse and Roehl showed a killer instinct as he pounced on the downed fighter and locked in a tight and painful Kimura for the impressive submission victory. Kelly Peterson showed the grappling skills that made him a two-time Minnesota state wrestling champion with his quick standing guillotine submission victory over John Amundson.
In the co-main event WEC title contender Brock Larson and Ultimate Fighter Finalist Tommy Speer took part in a Grappling only match that, after an initial stalemate, saw Larson control the contest with two takedowns before finally forcing Speer to tap out and taking home the victory with an agonizingly deep Kimura. After the fight Larson said that he would not be satisfied until he got the WEC championship belt and made no secret of his bad intentions for current champ Carlos Condit. Coming off a 37 second TKO of the always tough Carlo Prater, one would have to consider Larson the top contender and greatest threat to Condit’s current domination of the WEC.
The other co-main event saw WEC veteran Jeremy “The Landlord” Lang take on the 185 lb Rumble on the River Champ Evan Marks. The two exchanged evenly on the feet before Lang used his dominant wrestling to take Marks down and spent most of the first round landing strikes from the top. Marks did well to avoid much damage from the bottom, but could not mount much of an offense against Lang’s smothering ground and pound. In the second round Lang again got the takedown and pressed Marks against the cage while delivering constant punishment. Fatigue started to set in as Marks absorbed some big shots that bloodied his face and was forced to give up his back. Lang was quick to capitalize and sunk in the rear naked choke to earn the hard fought victory. |
