This was a pretty decent day as news stories go.
We had a request by Babalu to fight Tito Ortiz, and Matt Lindland wants to fight just about everyone but really wants to fight Vitor Belfort. This would definitely give a nice guage of where each fighter is in their weight class. Lindland is consistantly ranked in the top 10 in the 185 pound class but has had a small bout of inactivity lately. Belfort's situation is entirely different as he made his debut at Middleweight and against a tough Terry Martin, but not someone that was really expected to win. While everyone would enjoy this match up it isnt likely to come to life any time soon due to Vitor breaking his hand in his KO victory over Martin.
We cant forget Nick Diaz who also calls out Hayato Sakurai. This fight was supposed to take place already but was scrapped due to previous obligations to EliteXC.
Fightlinker found this interesting bit from and interview with Georges St. Pierre.
It’s a key bout for St-Pierre, whose contract with the UFC has two more fights left to run. He’s in negotiations for a new deal.
“Before it expires, they’ll want to negotiate because they won’t want me to be a free agent, let the Japanese get their hands on me,” St-Pierre said.
“It’s just another fight that’s being fought outside the octagon, but it’s very interesting.”
I would highly doubt that at any time it would even come into the mind of the UFC to not give GSP anything he wants to sign him. He is young and one of the most talented and athletic fighters in the UFC and someone thet can expect to draw fans and help carry the company.
The award for the most interesting news bit of the day:
Newly crowned WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko will face off against Andrei Arlovski for his first title defense. This is the best move for Affliction in that the two most impressive performances from their card will face off. If this fight ends with another fast stoppage for Fedor he will seal his legacy as the best fighter on the planet. It would also be a big marketing deal for Affliction and WAMMA in that their heavyweight champ would have beaten two of the UFC's best heavyweight fighters.
