WEC: Faber vs Pulver

Date Added: June 02, 2008 06:10:09 PM
Author: Brian Robertson
The surprise of this Sundays WEC event was definitely Urijah Faber, not because he won and not because he beat Jens Pulver, it was all in the way he did it. Faber stunned the crowd and Pulver alike with a crisp, accurate and effective striking game.

Coming into this fight most people believed Faber's only chance for victory would be to implement his usual ground and pound game against the , so we thought , far superior striker in Pulver.

Pulver was constantly peppered with hooks and jabs from the faster Faber and was wobbled on a few occasions. After this performance there is no doubt "The California Kid" is the #1 Featherweight fighter in the world.

The second title fight was amazing as Miguel Torres and Yoshiro Maeda went at it for 3 full rounds with the fight eventually being stopped due to Maeda's eye being swollen shut.

Micheal Rome of Bloody Elbow was there and here is his account of the fight:

Miguel Torres and Yoshiro Maeda tore the house down in Sacramento.  The second round was one of the best rounds of MMA I've ever seen, and it was actually pretty hard being in the press section and not being able to stand up and cheer for the skill being displayed.  Maeda was very game, and man Torres is so dangerous on the ground, this fight was a joy to watch.

The WEC show was the perfect response to EliteXC and CBS' first offering of MMA, it is just sad that more people were tuned in to CBS and not Versus. The show was filled with good fights and the two main bouts didnt dissapoint, as the WEC clearly showed it should be #2 behind the UFC.

I was very surprised that Urijah was able to box with, and sometimes out-box, Jens. I was sad that Jens lost, he's one of my favorite fighters, but I haven't seen a fight like that in a long time. Both guys left everything they had in that cage. Lesser men wouldn't have survived the second round in a fight with that pace.

Thats why I always have loved the smaller weight classes, they all go full motor all the time and put on awesome shows. If the WEC buidls their 135, 145 and 155 classes they should be able to take the #2 spot behind the UFC.
