Silva vs Liddell : One day later

Date Added: February 13, 2008 10:14:51 PM
Author: Brian Robertson

Yesterday it was announced that Chuck Liddell would be fighting Wanderlei Silva at UFC 76 but in an interview with Dana White by Kevin Iole the UFC President stated that the fight was no going to happen and probably would never happen.

White is quoted as saying “This is the worst news I could have possibly gotten,” White said. “It’s horrendous. I have been trying to make this fight for six years. I have done everything in my power I could do over the last six years to make this fight and it’s still not happening. I just don’t see it happening now.”

This comes as a shock since the fight was confirmed by Wanderlei Silva on his website yesterday. Apparently there was a deadline of July 11th to get the fight signed and the day came and went with nothing on paper.

This news, according to White, now leaves the UFC 76 card without a headlining bout; and leaves the UFC in a desperate search for a headliner. This card will also be the UFC debut of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua where he takes on Ryoto Machida.

In other UFC 76 news Dana White confirmed John Fitch will be taking on Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez  in  a battle of two of the arguably top 5 contenders in the Welterweight division.
