“Anderson really would love to fight Roy Jones, Jr. in a boxing match,” says his manager, Ed Soares, confirming recent speculation. “It’s not just talk, we really would like to put that fight together.”
The first question I have is, what the hell is he thinking? While Silva is definitely one of the most dangerous strikers in MMA, there is a big difference between striking for boxing and striking for MMA.
I dont doubt that Silva, if given the proper training and time to prepare, could make it a decent match. A pure boxing match though takes him away from his greatest strengths, his clinch and his knees.
Silva is arguably the best striker in the UFC and MMA, so why tarnish that legacy by facing one of the greatest boxers of all time in Roy Jones Jr.? There are plenty more matches ahead of Silva in the UFC, so I hope this is not something he is considering doing any time soon. |
